The challenge
An ageing 1990s office building faced steep ventilation and heating loads after tightening its envelope for net-zero operation. Conditioning 100 percent outside air from scratch would have blown the energy budget.
The solution
Counter-flow plate HRV recovered heat from exhaust to pre-condition supply air, and an air-source heat pump upgraded the recovered low-grade heat for space heating. The solid-wall plate kept streams separate with minimal maintenance.
The result
Ventilation and heating energy fell by about 45 percent, bringing operational carbon close to zero. The approach mirrors the cold-chain warehouse case in using sensible plate recovery to cut a building's dominant load.
Why this pairing wins
Recovery and heat pump attack the same load from two sides: less heat leaves, and what remains is cheaper to lift to useful temperature.
