Why NZEB depends on ventilation recovery
A near-zero energy building is highly airtight, so mechanical ventilation is the dominant thermal load. Without recovery, every cubic meter of warm exhaust is thrown away and every cubic meter of incoming air must be conditioned from scratch. Heat-recovery ventilation (HRV/ERV) closes that loop, typically returning 70 to 90 percent of the ventilation energy.
Plate versus wheel
A sensible plate core moves temperature only - simple, contamination-free and low maintenance. An enthalpy wheel or membrane also moves moisture, which helps comfort in humid climates. For clean commercial HVAC, both are viable; where exhaust is contaminated (labs, kitchens), a plate core is mandatory.
Integration with heat pumps
Pairing recovery with an air-source heat pump compounds savings: the core stops heat leaving, the pump upgrades what remains for space or process use.
Selection rules
Counter-flow plates reach 80 to 90 percent; cross-flow settle around 60 to 70 percent. Size to balanced airflow and the building ventilation rate, and choose enthalpy recovery where humidity control pays off.
