Air handling unit (AHU)With Heat Recovery

What is an AHU with Heat Recovery?

  • Function: An AHU conditions and circulates air, typically in commercial, industrial, or residential buildings. With heat recovery, it captures energy (heat or coolness) from the outgoing stale air and transfers it to the incoming fresh air without mixing the two airstreams.
  • Purpose: Reduces heating/cooling demands, lowers energy costs, and maintains a comfortable, healthy indoor environment.

How It Works

  • Winter: Warm exhaust air heats the cold incoming air via the heat exchanger, reducing the need for additional heating.
  • Summer: Cool exhaust air pre-cools the warm incoming air, lowering cooling demands.
  • Energy Savings: Recovers 60-95% of heat, significantly cutting energy use.

Choosing the Recovery Core in an AHU

  • Clean commercial HVAC: a rotary wheel gives maximum sensible + latent recovery.
  • Industrial, pharma, food, or any contaminated make-up air: an isolated plate core keeps exhaust separate from supply — required by hygiene and contamination rules.

An air handling unit with heat recovery integrates a heat exchanger into the AHU to reclaim energy from exhaust air. The recovered heat preconditions the fresh outdoor air, reducing heating and cooling demand. In most commercial and institutional buildings, this single addition is one of the highest-return energy measures available, with payback measured in months rather than years.

Plate heat-recovery cores are widely used because they isolate the streams and are easy to service. The core sits between supply and exhaust paths, transferring heat through thin plates. Effectiveness, pressure drop, and cleanability determine real-world savings, so specification should reflect the duty rather than a generic rating printed in a brochure.

When selecting an AHU heat-recovery core, confirm the materials suit the air quality and any corrosion risk on site. Aluminum serves clean indoor air; 316L or coated plates suit aggressive exhaust where longevity is the priority over first cost.

Maintenance access and filter placement protect the core from fouling and keep the promised effectiveness year after year. For projects pursuing energy labels, ask the supplier for test-based effectiveness data rather than estimated values. A correctly specified recovery core lowers utility cost, supports building-efficiency compliance, and reduces the size of the heating and cooling plant needed upstream, which can also save on equipment capital.
