Heat Recovery for Industrial Drying & Dehumidification

Drying is one of the largest thermal-energy consumers in manufacturing, and most of that energy leaves the building as hot, moist exhaust. An air-to-air heat exchanger placed in the dryer exhaust recovers that heat and preheats the incoming supply air - often cutting fuel use by 20-40%. It is the single highest-return heat-recovery upgrade in drying operations.

Industries and scenarios

The application list is long and growing:

  • Seafood, herbal and medicinal drying - shrimp, mussel, squid, herbs and traditional medicines, where stainless or PP cores resist salt and wash-down.
  • Tobacco and flue-cured leaf - barn curing exhaust holds large recoverable heat.
  • Wood, lumber and charcoal kilns - high-volume warm exhaust.
  • Sludge and biosolids drying - heat-pump sludge drying especially benefits from corrosion-proof (PP) cores.
  • Printing, coating and laminating ovens - hot solvent-laden air.
  • Textile stentering (定形机) and dyeing - continuous hot-air ranges.
  • Food lines - sausage, dried mussels, squid and similar.

Which core to specify

  • Stainless plate core - general and salt-fog duty.
  • PP / polymer core - corrosive, hygienic or very moist exhaust.
  • Hydrophilic aluminum plate core - standard HVAC-grade drying make-up air.
  • Cross-flow or counter-flow - counter-flow gives the best recovery efficiency when space allows.

Practical notes

Size the core to the dryer airflow, not the nameplate. Allow access for periodic cleaning - drying exhaust carries fines and condensate. Where exhaust is sticky, a washable PP core pays for itself. Pair the recovery core with a make-up air unit so the recovered heat actually displaces fresh fuel.

Key takeaway

If you run a dryer, you are paying to heat make-up air twice. An air-to-air recovery core makes you pay once.
